Essay

The thesis focuses on the problem of differentiation in teaching English listening comprehension to the 4-th grade students with the help of computer. The research provides theoretical substantiation and practical elaboration of the methodology of differentiation in teaching English listening comprehension to young learners using computers. The notion differentiated teaching of listening comprehension has been specified. Difficulties of using dif-ferentiation in teaching listening comprehension were distinguished and types of graded tasks were suggested. The requirements to the computer programme for young learners have been described; criteria for selecting texts were specified. Four complexes of computer exercises to develop English listening skills have been worked out. The effectiveness of the suggested methodology was verified and confirmed during the experimental teach-ing. Methodological recommendations on how to organize differentiation in teaching English listening comprehen-sion to young learners with the help of the computer programme “Yippee” have been developed and applied in practice in six Ukrainian schools.
