The thesis is dedicated to historical and pedagogical analysis of formation and development of medical education in Ukraine in the second half of the 19th - beginning of the 20th c. In the thesis the social-political pre-conditions of formation and development of medical education on the territory of Eastern and Western Ukraine are analyzed. The history of formation and development of higher medical education is traced. The peculiarities of development of professional students' training in educational medical institutions are determined, the development of secondary medical education, organization of higher women's medical education are characterized. The attention is paid to the organization of professional training of the future doctors, scientific-methodical providing of the educational process. The question of teachers' training for medical educational institutions is considered, and the peculiarities of the teaching staff activity are studied. The role of medical societies and organizations is analyzed in the development of medical enlightenment, in general cultural development of Ukraine in the second half of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century.
