Essay

The thesis deals with methods of testing the first-year and second-year students’ competence in speaking French at departments of modern languages. Speaking skills are regarded as part of students’ speaking competence, the contents and structure of which were specified. Systematic, communicative, competence and level approaches to testing were taken into account in accordance. The methodological principles of testing were specified in the framework of the research. The types of speaking testing tasks were defined. The requirements to the visual stimuli were described. The communicative tasks typical for the students of the 1st and 2nd years were distinguished. The speaking subtests were developed as achievement modular tests in line with the requirements of the Curriculum underpinned by the Common European Framework of Reference. They are intended to measure the speaking ability of student teachers within a prescribed list of subjects and communicative functions. The appropriate analytic rating scales were developed to assess speaking skills. The effectiveness of the suggested methodology was verified and confirmed during the piloting. Methodological recommendations on how to organize the assessment of speaking French in the learning process have been worked out.
