Essay

The thesis focuses on the problem of developing a methodology of preparing students for English language learning without direct guidance of the teacher. Psychological and pedagogical aspects of implementing autonomy in language learning were studied. The psychological structure of students’ autonomy is defined, and the procedure of assessing students’ level of autonomy has been grounded. Students’ professional needs in areas of “Organization and Management of Transportation” and “Automobiles and their maintenance” have been taken into account while selecting the communicative content of English language learning. A typology of strategies necessary for developing students’ language skills, linguistic and strategic competences and therefore students’ autonomy has been advised. Three types of instructions were recommended for integrated development of competences inside and outside the class-room. A general system of exercises has been theoretically substantiated, and three complexes of exercises have been developed. On their basis four variants of the methodology for organizing autonomy in language learning were elaborated and investigated. The effectiveness of the methodology has been proved during two series of experimental training. On the basis of research findings an optimal content of strategies has been set and appropriate sequence of their usage has been recommended.
