Essay

The Thesis is dedicated to the history of formation of the Research Library holdings of Taurida National V. I. Vernadsky University. Chronological framework of the research covers the period from foundation of Taurida University (1918 - lower limit), when the formation of the University Library was started, to the german-fascist invasion of Crimea (1941 - upper limit), when the Library holdings were partly evacuated, partly plundered. The Thesis is the first full-scale study on the history of the University Library formation. The stages of the Library formation are considered: formation of cabinet libraries and participation of Taurida University professors in this process (N. N. Bunge, V. I. Vernadsky, P. A. Dvoychenko, N. N. Krylov, N. I. Kuznetsov, A. I. Markevich, I. I. Tihonovsky and others); formation of the Academic Library. The Thesis covers 5 large private book collections, which were received by the University Library holding during the 1920th. These are: the noble book collections of the Vorontsovs, V. S. Popov, A. M. Kritskiy; book collections of the professors of Taurida University: R. I. Gelvig, A. I. Markevich and M. A. Tihomandritskiy; a part of the unique library of the scientist T. I. Vyazemskiy. Ways of acquisition of private collections were established, the content of these libraries was reconstituted, the most important documents were classified.
