The dissertation is the first comprehensive study of the cultural, public, and rofessional socio-communication activities of Roman Lutsyk, one of the founders of the modern Lviv school of book studies in the field of incunabulistics and research of old printed books and a prominent librarian in Lviv in the twentieth century. The raising and development of Roman Lutsyk’s professional activity and his cultural, social, and professional experience are characterized on the basis of his scientific research, press publications, as well as archival sources and professional scientific literature. The main stages of Roman Lutsyk’s socio-communication activity in the process of forming his professional career are identified, and the unknown or little-known facts of his life and activities are detailed on the basis of a microhistorical approach. The theoretical and practical experience of Roman Lutsyk as a long-term Head of the Rare Book Department of the Library is studied, analyzed, and updated. The main features of the raising, functioning, and development of one of the most important departments of the library, led by Roman Lutsyk, are highlighted, and the professional competence and skills of a library specialist in processing and preserving the collection and improving reader service are identified.
The key aspects of Roman Lutsyk’s bibliographic practices related to the disclosure of the unique collection of the Rare Book Department are characterized. The scientific achievements of Roman Lutsyk in the field of book studies, in particular in the study of old printed books, are analyzed, and his theoretical and methodological approaches to the study and processing of incunabula, paleotypes, and other Cyrillic and Latin old printed books rare books of XIX–XX centuries are elucidated. It is concluded that Roman Lutsyk’s publications in the field of book and library studies, catalogues of old printed editions, and bibliographic files created in accordance with the requirements of bibliographic science of the time are an important source for studying the history of books, printing, and librarianship in Ukraine in general and the Galician region in particular.
