Essay

The dissertation spotlights the peculiarities of the European Union as a regional integration-directed organization possessing some supranational elements that explains the unique features of its institutional mechanism when the member states delegate the part of their sovereign rights to the Union. The notions of EU institute, its basic characteristics are described, as well as the classifications of the EU institutions are introduced and the institutional mechanism, its functioning principles are specified and analyzed in the dissertation. A special focus is rendered both to the distinctive features of division of powers and functions among the EU institutions, as well as the peculiarities of the EU institutional system's performance in separate pillars which are excluded or partially covered by a supranational approch towards the regulation of integration processes. The dissertation provides an insight into the main problem areas of the current institutional reform and the analyses of the prominent changes of the Lisbon Treaty in part of enhancing the democratic legitimacy and transparency, efficiency and effectiveness of the institutional mechanism.
