The thesis provides a theoretical generalization and a new solution to the scientific problem of the manifestation of perfectionism of academically capable students. Perfectionism is defined to be a multivariate and hierarchically organized individual feature. Generally, perfectionism manifests itself in two forms of behavior: functional and disfunctional. Functional perfectionism features generalized components of high standards and high organization. Disfunctional perfectionism implies intolerant attitude to mistakes as well as anxiety, inclination to delay taking action, nervousness caused by inadequacy, social isolation. Self-sufficiency as well as parental expectation and criticism border on functional and disfunctional perfectionism. The following perfectionism types are outlined: a type with functional perfectionism, a type without displaying perfectionism, a type with disfunctional perfectionism. The academic capability is pointed out to be directly connected to the discipline while disfunctional perfectionism is reversely connected. High discipline and low disfunctional perfectionism levels are determined to be a condition for the favourable influence of high standards on the manifestation of the academic capability. The highest level of academic capability is defined to be typical of the functional perfectionism type.
