Essay

The dissertation discloses theoretical problems of morphological classification of languages in the works of European (including Ukrainian and Russian) and American linguists of the XIXth - XXth centuries in the linguistic historiography for the first time. The background of the morphological classification of languages is thoroughly investigated in the concepts of the West-European linguists (J. Schlegel, F. Schlegel, A. W. von Schlegel, W. von Humboldt) as well as in the concepts of the American linguists (J. Heckwelder, P. S. Du Ponceau, J. Pickering) with the view on the scientists' specific attitude towards evaluating character of classifications and on the priority of the terms introduction for defining language types.
