Marko I. Formation of the official-manner style of the West Ukrainian variant in literary language at the end of the XIX-th - beginning of the XX-th centuries

The dissertation deals with the study of social and political conditions that contribute to the formation of the style of official documents in the West Ukrainian language and cultural environment in the late 1800s - early 1900s. Language units of lexical, phraseological, word building, and grammatical levels of the language system typical for the style of official documents are defined. The object of the research is the style of official documents of the West Ukrainian variant of the standard language of the given period. The objective of the dissertation is to establish the influence of the historical tradition and social status of the Ukrainian language in Galicia and Bukovyna in the late 1800s - early 1900s on the development of the style of official documents of the West Ukrainian variant of the standard language and reflection of the given processes in modern standard Ukrainian. The following methods of linguistic analysis have been implied: descriptive, contrastive, method of language simulation, componential and contextual analyses. Theoretical value of the dissertation. The results of the present research give an opportunity to specify and in some instants to revise the periodization of the standard Ukrainian language, to provide typological characteristics of the style of official documents of the West Ukrainian variant of the standard language in the late 1800s - early 1900s, to generalize system characteristics of texts, regularities of interlingual and cross-cultural relations that influenced the development and formation of the style of official documents of modern Ukrainian. Practical value of the dissertation lies in the possibility of its implementation in reading such courses as Modern Ukrainian (in particular such topics as: "Vocabulary of the Ukrainian Language From the Standpoint of its Usage: Active and Passive", "Ukrainian Word-stock in Respect to its Functional and Stylistic Use", "Role of Borrowed Words in Ukrainian Vocabulary" etc.), lexicography, especially in compiling terminological dictionaries, textbooks and manuals on history of the standard Ukrainian language and the style of the official documents, teaching special courses and seminars on historical lexicology and stylistics of the Ukrainian language devoted to the study of dynamic processes in lexis and phraseology of the Ukrainian language. Actuality of the research consists in the fact that with the help of the West Ukrainian periodicals of the late 1800s - early 1900s the following attempts are carried out in Ukrainian linguistics: widened the scope of the study of the history of the official style in standard Ukrainian; introduced new sources that hadn't been an object of the linguistic investigation; performed complex analysis of sources regarding socio-linguistic and stylistic aspects; established traditional and historical background of the lexical means of the style of official documents, degree of their synchronic penetration into the language of periodicals and literary works of the West Ukrainian authors.
