Essay

The place and role of Sich Fighters' works in the development of the Ukrainian culture in the first half of the ХХ century have been explored on the grounds of study and generalization of historiography and historical sources. An origin, ideological and national formation of Sich Fighters in the beginning of the ХХ century have been shown. Intellectual potential, particularly the role of the Press Kvatira of the Legion Ukrainian Sich Fighters (1914-1918) as the center of spiritual and cultural life has been demonstrated. The focus of research falls on the ideological principles, main directions and subject scope of literature represented by prose, poetry and social and political essays, the artistic heritage of writers and publicists, organizational forms of arts, publishing and press. The Main subject directions and organizational forms of Sich Fighters' fine art have been analyzed; creative heritage of O. Kurilas, I. Ivanec, L. Gec, other artists and its genre features as well as the impact on the development of the Ukrainian national art have been described. The research also covers Sich Fighters' musical works and their basic direction such as fighters' songs, stylistic peculiarities of the composers' musical works, especially works of M. Gayvoronskiy. Sich Fighters' theatre activity (1914-1919) at the battle front line, creative ties with the professional theaters in Lviv, Ternopil and Kyiv have been researched. K. Rubchakova, L. Kurbas, I. Buchma and A. Krushel'nickiy's achievements and their contribution to the development of the Ukrainian theater are described.
