Essay

Object of the research is the would-be translators' training in decoding the intonation of the English speech. The aim of the research is to give scientific grounds, elaborate and verify experimentally the methods aimed at teaching the would-be translators to decode the intonation of gender-marked English speech. The research methods are theoretical, empirical, diagnostic, statistical. The novelty of the research consists of the following items: the pedagogical conditions contributing to the effective work at decoding the intonation of gender-marked English speech are stated for the first time. The content of the concept "gender-marked English speech" has been specified. The variability degree of the intonational means providing the actualization of gender markers in the English and Ukrainian dialogical gender-marked speech has been defined in order to prevent from interfering. The distinctive characteristics of the gender-marked speech caused by the interlocutors' social status, their emotional state and semantic correlation of the lexical and grammatical means used to structure their utterances have been revealed. The standard English gender-marked dialogical discourse has been worked out. The efficiency criteria, indicators charactersing the levels of the students' (studying at Foreign Languages Departments) skills to decode the intonation of gender-marked English speech have been determined. The linguistic and didactic model of the pedagogical conditions realization needed to organize effective teaching of the would-be translators to decode the intonation of gender-marked English speech within the credit and module system has been developed. The aims and content of each training stage have been defined. The theory and practice of professionally oriented English and translation training of students from linguistic establishments of higher education have been successfully developed. The results are the following ones: the methodology of developing gender-marked English speech intonation decoding skills, the training program, a system of exercises (introductory, operating and functional) and the lessons content while training the would-be translators in listening comprehension have been developed and introduced into practice of professional development. The degree of practical verification is high. The corresponding branch is pedagogical, institution of higher education.
