The thesis introduces a new approach to study of structural and semantic characteristics of nicknames in English, German, and Ukrainian. The paper presents general theoretical background of the research and suggests a new procedure for analyzing nicknames' structure and semantics. Nicknames are classified according to their origin, formation patterns, implication, and meaning. The author identifies common and different features of nicknames in the studied languages.
