Essay

Object of research is personality characteristics of children with mental retardation. Subqect of research is the mechanisms of psychological protection of children with mental retardation and adults, and intra-system interactions. Methods of research: To solve the basic problems of the research, we have used the following methods: systematic and structural method, theoretical analysis and generalization of scientific background on the issues under study, the method of scientific observation, the method of conversation; method of psycho-diagnostic examination, the method of mathematical statistics. The scientific novelty of the results of research: the features of psychological protection of children with mental retardation in comparison with the protection of adults; сlarify the role of the various categories of adults (mothers, fathers, positively and negatively significant for the child's family members) in the ontogenesis of psychological protection of the child with mental retardation; further developed ideas about the formation of patterns of psychological defense in children with mental retardation; a method for expert evaluation of child protection mechanisms. The practical significance of the study: The results of this study can be used in family counseling, family and individual psychotherapy, training working with parents. The established relationship between the characteristic features of the psychological defense of parents and their educational style enable early prediction of likely problems in the child-parent relationship in a family raising a child with mental retardation.
