3. The thesis deals with historical analysis of the problem concerning origination and development of the Sokol gymnastic movement as a sociocultural phenomenon and the following peculiarities of the Sokol movement development in the territory of present Ukraine are identified: 1. Socio-educational - Ministry of People's Education officially introduced Sokol gymnastics into educational institutions as a basic method of physical education of the youth. 2. Sociocultural - As distinct from other gymnastic-sport organizations, representatives of different (in age, sex and social position) segments of population had the right to enter Sokol organizations. 3. Military-patriotic - Military department of the Russian empire introduced the Sokol system of gymnastics to the military educational establishments and it became a foundation of the physical training for armed forces personnel. 4. Culture-health - Sokol movement was an initiator and promoter of many cultural and educational-cognitive events (lectures, excursions, health-improving and cultural walks, music-vocal evenings). Every Sokol institution had libraries and reading halls. 5. Scientific-methodical - Sokol paid great attention to periodicals and publication of scientific works as a factor which promoted popularization of the Sokol idea and contributed to improvement of professional competence of teachers in Sokol organizations. 6. Sport-gymnastics - Gymnastic societies "Sokol" widely used different sports in their practice, such as football, basketball, fencing, tennis, bicycle, weightlifting, wrestling, track and field athletics, skiing, skating, hockey. Moreover, "Sokols" are founders of football in Kyiv and of handball in Kharkov.
