Essay

The thesis discusses the history of the Roman military presence in Chersonesos against the background of the analysis of archaeological and epigraphic sources. The re-lations between Chersonesos and the Roman Empire had been developing gradually. Originally, the Roman army participated in episodic military actions in the territory of the Crimea. A small city garrison was established in Chersonesos at the turn of the first and second centuries. This garrison considerably enlarged from 140s AD onwards. Although the mid-third century crisis influenced the forms of the Roman presence, it did not result in the pullout of troops. In the Later Roman period, Chersonesos remained the only place in the peninsula where the constant imperial garrison was stationed. The Roman military material culture has been analysed for the first time to appear a phenomenon greatly different from the urban culture synchronous to it. At the same time, the Roman military antiquities correspond to the materials investigated in the for-tresses in the Roman frontiers. Key words: Roman Empire, Chersonesos, material culture, army, military equip-ment, armament, military costume, ammunition.
