Essay

For the first time in Ukrainian literary the manuscript attempts to examine the works by Nechuy-Levitsky from the position of archetypical criticism and psychoanalysis. The paper searches the artistic embodiment of specificity and dynamics of archetypes (water, space, cultural hero, mother, wise old man, a new creation, a person, hell, paradise, a family, the crucified god, shadows, chaos, a house, a cross road), and also features their functioning. It is proved that the art system of an artist is dominated by archetypes of the crucified god and shadows realizing Nechuy-Levitsky's vision of life and destiny of the Ukrainian people as tragic. Nechuy-Levitsky's works are highlighted in the terms of psychoanalysis too. The attention of thesis's author is focused on the identity of the artist, humanist and national orientation of his writing, Nechuy-Levitsky's skills to portray exceptional human characters, to trace the dynamics of man's inner world in the extreme situations, to show the underlying motives of his behavior. The author comes to the conclusion that while creating an artistic model of Ukrainian reality the writer unknowingly used the archetypes of the collective unconsciousness which made it possible to reproduce a broad panorama of the soul of the Ukrainian
