Essay

The thesis is devoted to the study of the formation of Ukraine's foreign policy identity by analysing the foreign policy of Ukraine with regard to the specific features of its post-Soviet transition and its self-positioning as a newly emerged international actor with reference to the European choice concept. Following the moderate constructivism approach within the framework of social constructivist studies of international relations the author defines Ukraine's foreign policy identity as its motivational and behavioral dispositions for the implementation of foreign policy based on perceptions and expectations as to itself and with regard to how it is viewed by other international actors. The intersubjective quality of Ukraine's foreign policy identity is explained by the constitutive role of recognition for the formation of the former in the course of international interaction, since it is through the recognition by the Other that a certain social role of an individual acquires its social meaning. Thus, the formation of Ukraine's foreign policy identity is impacted by intersubjective structures, which are explained through the concept of recognition.
