Chmil' L. Pottery of the Middle Dnieper region (16-18 centuries).

In the dissertation a study of shapes, ornaments and pottery technology of the Middle Dnieper region (16-18 centuries) has been carried out for the first time. Upon the basis of statistics and mathematical methods a great number of the most common types - pots and plates - has been analyzed as well as their typology and chronology have been developed. The author analyzed all sorts of pottery, retraced the periods of its genesis and development as well as functional purposes and names according to written sources. The main components of the technological process according to archaeological and ethnographic sources have been defined. The author describes technological components of pottery making and its marketing. Pottery centers have been localized according to archaeological and written sources. The genesis and development of basic methods of pottery ornamentation have been investigated. The most popular types of ornamentation as well as partly their semantic importance and origin have been retraced. The author also analyses the signs-symbols on pottery.
