Essay

This thesis is dedicated to the research of the functional-stylistic and pragmatic characteristics of early-Christian Greek homily. The characteristic features of homily, caused by reflection of sacred world in human speech, have been determined. Lexical, word-building, morphologic, syntactic linguistic means of supernatural contents presentation have been analysed. Specific character of addresser, addressee and their interaction in the homilies has been described. The genre of homily has been analysed in the aspects of themes, composition and stylistic features. Development of homily genre in John Chrysostom's activity has been retraced and the attempt to find out extralinguistic causes of this development has been done.
