Complex historical and cultural research of the national and cultural development of rusyn-ukrainians of the Eastern Slovakia of the second part of ХVІІІ - the first part of ХХ century for the first time was executed in this dissertation. National and cultural orientation, national consciousness, language question and intellectual's activity are defined as basic components of national and cultural development. Confession membership, public education system organization, national and cultural movements of Slavic peoples, government Magyarization - are characterized as factors that influences national and cultural development of rusyn-ukrainians. National and cultural processes of Slavic peoples of Austrian Empire are researched and the degree of their influence on rusyn-ukrainian intellectual's activities is defined. The formation of basic directions of national and cultural orientation (great russian, rusyn, ukrainian) and language question are analyzed. Cultural and enlightening activity of the national intellectuals was considered.
