The paper conducted a systematic multi-aspect analysis of the process of formation and development of methods of teaching history in the national elementary school second half of XIX - early XX cent. It characterizes the external and internal factors, stages, trends and features of this historical phenomenon in a methodical chronological framework of the study. Reveals the contribution of local teachers and scientists in the theory and practice of history education methods in primary education. Author put into scientific research some little known facts and unknown sources that extend and elaborate scientific and methodological understanding of the development of history teaching methods in elementary school in Ukraine the second half of XIX - early XX century. The conclusion about the possibility of using the experience gained in the practice of the national school.
