Essay

The dissertation reveals the beliefs of Early Slavic population of the territory of Ukraine on the sacred space during the Early Medieval period. An attempt to show the Pre-Christian beliefs on the sacred space as an integral system combining different aspects of material and spiritual culture was made. Particular attention is paid to sanctuariums and cult objects as well as their place in the system of religious and ideological beliefs of Early Slavs. Material objects associated with Pre-Christian cults as well as the reflection of the beliefs on sacred space in toponymy are researched. On the base of folklore and ethnographic material the reconstruction of Pre-Christian beliefs was made. In partiular the toponimic legends connected to the locations of ancient cult objects are studied.
