Synkevych N. Social and cultural functions of Ukrainian choral art

The dissertation is dedicated of social and cultural functions of Ukrainian choral art. Systematization of functions with the orientation to their role in ethnic self-realization is done. The following functional groups are distinguished: essential, that puts begining to the genesis of choral art; attendant, that includes some additional functions; immanent and transcendental, that has been a characteristic of national choral art. Correlation between essential functions for Ukrainain mentality, included religiosity, cordocentrism, traditionalism is traced. Regional peculiarities of formation and ontology of functions that were developed in secular organizational activity are studied by example of Eastern Halychyna and Naddnipryanshchyna (before the totalitarian regime). Some differences caused de historical and political circumstances and relations with the authorities are point out. The specifics of functioning of the choral system in the Northern American and Western European diaspora is shown in a separate part. Decline and distortion of the natural vector of Ukrainian chorus development in the USSR and rebirth and flourishing of this art in independent Ukraine is stated.
