Essay

Current dissertation is dedicated to the complex politological research of the process of German national identity construction. The attention is concentrated upon the rotation of application of traditional and post traditional national identity constructs started from the period of the second half of the XIX century until the beginning of the XXI century. The stress is laid on the permanent transformation of the German cultural nation project into political nation at the end of the XIX century and through the whole XX century. Several main aspects in particular are analyzed in details. First of all, the attention turns to the political nation formation process that started at the end of the XIX century. Also, legitimacy loss of traditional national constructs after 1945, directly opposite national identities in GDR and FRG construction until 1990, and regular initiation of the modern nation construction process in united Germany in 1990 are analyzed. The main attention in dissertation is turned to the influence of cultural and ideological aspects on German national identity construction. The period to analyze includes the first German unification in 1871; the crisis of national identity in 1945 and postwar Germany separation into socialist GDR and capitalist FRG; the second nation unification in 1990 and posterior period. Also the main reasons of permanent national identity crisis are determined. First of all they are connected with impossibility to apply nationalism and another traditional national constructs to national identity construction process. Furthermore, the attempts to simplify national identity construction to economical equalization of life level in Old and New Lands do not contribute to overcoming national identity crisis. Another reason is connected with the lack of social and political consensus concerning national identity construction ways and methods in the recently united Germany. No integrity of ethnic and cultural minorities into German society and state provokes national identity crisis. Finally, the permanent national identity crisis is connected with the absence of ethnic and social-economic complementarities.
