Essay

The research provides theoretical grounds and experimental data on the methodology of teaching students majoring in Philology to render source text implicatures of definiteness/indefiniteness in sight interpreting from Ukrainian into English. The author defines the concept of ‘interpreting’ as the object of teaching and studies the strategies the students use in sight interpreting. The thesis argues for the difference between speech and interpreting skills; presents the data concerning students’ abilities to render source text implicatures of definiteness/indefiniteness in sight interpreting; suggests a typology of situations regulating the English article usage; views the types and correlation of exercises for teaching rendering source text implicatures of definiteness/indefiniteness in sight interpreting. The author developed a battery of exercises for teaching students majoring in Philology to render source text implicatures of definiteness/indefiniteness in sight interpreting from Ukrainian into English, as well as the model of the said teaching, recommendations for the use thereof and a textbook to support it.
