The thesis deals with the issue of developing English-language competence in writing and provides theoretical substantiation and practical elaboration of the methodology of teaching writing book reviews to future teachers. The theoretical basis for teaching reviewing has been determined: the genre characteristics of the review as the object of teaching have been described, the essential didactic and methodological principles have been specified, the social, psychological and linguistic aspects of expressing critical judgements in writing have been analyzed. The practical section of the dissertation offers an inventory of the habits and skills necessary for writing reviews, the selected teaching materials, a system of exercises and two models of the learning process. The suggested methodology has been tested via experimental teaching which verified the effectiveness of the proposed system of exercises and the advisability of applying the “step-by-step” model which presupposes gradual mastering of the separate structural elements of the review. The corresponding methodological recommendations have been put forward.
