Essay

This dissertation reveals the background, characteristics and main stages of the development of biological science on the territory of Ukraine in the second half of XIX – early XX century. The paper analyzes the main trends of biological science (botany and zoology), the contribution of local scientists in the formation of mycology, algology, phytosociology, taxonomy and morphology of plants, spineless zoology, ichthyology, ornithology etc. The research highlights the role of biological scientists V.M. Cherniaev, P.M. Krylova, S.H. Navashina, J.K. Pachosky, O.A. Potebnia, L.S. Tsenkovsky, and others in the development of national science, it reveals the practical importance of basic researches, and establishment of new research directions in the study of nature. The study analyzed J K. Pachosky’s scientific expeditions and their impact on the development of floristic research, the applied aspects of entomological researches (late XIX – early XX century), the scientific contribution to the development of the herbarium thing and clarified the assessment of results of national scientists and biologists’ scientific researches of J.K. Pachosky’s reviews.
