The thesis is submitted for obtaining the degree of candidate of political science in specialty 23.00.01 - political institutions and processes. - Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University, MESYS Ukraine, Kyiv, 2012. The thesis considers the institutionalisation of civic education in modern democratic countries, including Ukraine. The conducted analysis established that a model and context of nationality and citizenship as an integrative quality of a citizen, values, behaviour, knowledge and skills of citizenship as well as teaching methods are composing the ideological and theoretical basis for civic education. The axiological and behavioural dimensions are the most crucial in the process of civic education. The basic ideas lying at the foundation of civic education are liberal and democratic values, apprehending core democratic mechanisms and mastering skills of practical action. The dissertation proposed a classification of civic education which is based on the questions that the civic education is aimed at solving: (1) education for democracy, (2) education for democratic citizenship, and (3) civic education itself. Institutional forms of civic education in different countries vary.
