The thesis basing on ethno-demographic statistics and the results of field studies by the author highlights the ethnic and demographic, ethnosocial, ethno-linguistic situation in Kirovograd region late 40's - early 90-ies of XX century. Basing on the wide range of sources the author examines changes in the population size of the ethnic groups which were living in the Kirovograd region. On the material interethnic marriages the contacts between ethnic groups of the region are analyzed. Analyzed The ethnolinguistic processes occurring in the population of cities and villages are dealt with. The author considers the language situation in the agricultural sector and enterprises of Kirovograd. The influence of Russificaton and its negative effects on the Ukrainian of the region are described. The author deals with linguistic processes in governmental, educational, publishing, theatrical and media spheres in the region. The main causes of Russian language widespread and the decline of Ukrainian language popularity among the population of Kirovograd region. The author argues that the privileged status of the Russian language has accelerated the processes of linguistic assimilation and dissemination of such phenomena as "surzhyk" (Russian-Ukrainian dialect).
