Essay

The thesis deals with the problem of forming young learners’ grammatical competence in English. The psychophysiological premises of forming primary school learners’ grammatical competence in English according to the stages of their mastering grammar material in English have been analyzed. The typology of difficulties of learning grammar material in English by primary school children has been researched. The typology of grammar mistakes made by pupils of the 2–4-th forms during detailed observation has been made. The detailed analysis of some course series in English and textbooks in Ukrainian for primary school referring young learners’ grammatical competence in English forming has been done. The peculiarities and the most appropriate way of presenting new grammar material in English to primary school learners have been researched. The subsystem of exercises and the model of forming primary school learners’ grammatical competence in English have been worked out. The experimental teaching has proved the suggested methodology validity; its optimal variant has been substantiated. Methodological recommendations to teachers for organizing teaching grammar material in English to young learners have been developed.
