Essay

The thesis for the first time in Ukrainian literary contains the comprehensive analysis of artistic and historical works of Mykola Kostomarov aimed at studing - the writer's specifics of literary historicism that lies in the the synthesis of historiographical and historiosophical principles related to the determination of subjective and evaluative principles as a dominating facts in the interpretation of historical events. With all the attention and the respect to the factual and source base, Mykola Kostomarov was primarily interested in the anthropological dimension of history, the role of a personality, the value of life in the context of nationwide drama or tragedy. Thus, the factor is of a spiritual and psychological nature, rather than of a factual nature. By showing an example of patriarchal ideals of human, M.Kostomarov sought to uncover the opposite values of an individual, psychology of each personality, while there was a severe dependence on the general social superiority over an individual, the boundary between good and evil, truth and falsehood, freedom and bondage, moral rise and spiritual collapse. The author outlines the basic identities of the stories under consideration: M.Kostomarov shows the formula of the eternal mental anxiety, the constant desire for progression for the sake of truth and honor - individual, collective, national, that shaped artistic, actually Kostomarov's vision of the history.
