Essay

Impressionism as an aesthetic movement and a type of artistic thinking manifests itself in the language in the use of a special pattern of words and structures of color and light semantics, synesthesia, which are employed in a stylistic context specifically designed for a purpose of creating the impression of immediate subjective sensuous (predominantly visual) experience and achieving vividness as of the impressionistic painting. The thesis identifies and analyzes both extra-linguistic (national identity), and linguistic factors (language belonging to a particular structural type) of impressionistic effect in the Russian, English and German texts and adopts the term impressionistic linguistics to refer to the formal features of impressionistic descriptions which are used to evoke subjective and sensory impressions.
