Essay

The thesis investigates the institute of citizenship within EU and identifies trends in its development. Characteristic features of the establishment of EU citizenship as an international legal institute are researched. It was found that the dynamic EU citizenship is determined by its quasi-state character and special legal nature. It was found that EU citizenship as a holistic phenomenon is characterized by the unity of social, political and legal components. Also it was determined that this combination of state and the nation has created a dual criterion of Union citizenship. The author proved that the citizenship of the European Union is a major structural element of integration in quasi-federation state.It is determinated by the features of regulation of the legal status of the citizen of EU. The author grounded the necessity of introducing in the EU gradual unification of national citizenship laws in the EU states. He pointed on the expediency of bringing the citizenship legislation of Ukraine in accordance with the legal framework of the EU legislation, in particular, to avoid cases of multiple nationality.
