Essay

The dissertation is a complex archaeological research of the amphorae and red slip ware (RSW) of Mangup. 22 types of amphorae and 26 forms of RSW were systematized and catalogued, while their description and refined dating were provided, and origins and regions of distribution were clarified. As based on the analysis of wares, several stages of population settlement were traced out, the trade contacts from the second half of the third to the seventh centuries were mapped. Taking into account the finds of amphorae and RSW, one can say that the area of the plateau was populated from the second half of the third century. Pontic and Phocean RSW and goods in amphora that were manufactured in the Northern Black Sea, Asia Minor, the Aegean Sea, the Mediterranean, and the Caucasus found their way to the settlement. The goods from remote places came to Mangup through Chersonesos. The total lack of amphorae and RSW in the Mangup archaeological assemblages of the eight century made it possible to single out this century as a separate "pre-Khazar" period in the history of this settlement.
