Essay

The thesis is devoted to symbolist finding of Yaakov Mamontov in the context of modernist culture of Ukraine in the first quarter of the 20th century. The paradigm of "new drama" is simulated on the basis of the creative achievements of European and Ukrainian playwrights, the features of the typology of Ya. Mamontov's early drama are revealed, through which it integrates into the European Symbolist drama, and then in the European cultural space. Works of foreign and Ukrainian authors, including G. Іbsen, Lesya Ukrainka, V. Vinnychenko, M. Kostomarov, M. Kulish, are considered, philosophical concepts of F. Nietzsche, O. Spengler, A. Schopenhauer and Z. Freud are conceptualized as part of the comparative analysis. The structure of the Ya. Mamontov's symbolist drama, its special features and intentions are investigated; philosophical and ideological foundations of the artist are outlined, the evolution of his work is traced. The paper presents a new approach to the comprehension of the works of the playwright - the general cultural intertextual interpretation. Thesis is one of the first attempts at art history Ukrainian thought to characterize the early works of the playwright in the context of Ukrainian and European modernist culture.
