Rakhno M. The Slavonic and Scandinavian Correspondences of the Epic Texts (Vocabulary, Semantics, Stylistics).

The thesis deals with the search for lexical and stylistic parallels between the Scandinavian and the Ukrainian epic texts. It consists of four chapters, each dedicated to a certain facet of this complex issue. The heroic epics are the important means of transferring of the historical memory. Thus it should be viewed not from only one point of view, but rather with the help of the interdisciplinary approach. The history of the search for the above-mentioned parallels in the period from the 19th till the 20th century is provided in the first chapter. The studies conducted in this field show a certain incompleteness of the accumulated knowledge of the issue. It means that the thesis is positively topical. The research described the second chapter shows a certain similarity of the Ukrainian and the Germanic epic traditions. The aim of the both epic systems is also similar; the both ones serve to preserve and transfer the collective folk memory, to maintain the continuity of traditions, to meliorate the warrior's spirits, to raise the next generation according to the preserved traditions.
