Essay

The thesis investigates the nature and functioning of euphemisms in modern Ukrainian mystical prose, the genesis and definitions of the term "euphemism". It also reveals similarities and distinguishing features of euphemisms and related linguistic units: dysphemisms, synonyms, slang expressions, cryptonyms and phraseological units. The paper examines semantic and structural features of euphemisms, distinguishing monolexical, polylexical and descriptive contextual euphemistic linguistic units. It also reveals the functions and frequency of euphemisms in fiction. On the basis of the degree of steadiness and reproducibility of euphemistic units, easiness of their decoding and social labeling euphemisms are divided into common language, speech and occasional ones. The principal modern linguistic techniques and ways of euphemization have been defined as follows: metaphorical nomination, metonymical nomination, synecdoche, pronominalisation, meiotic division, pun etc.
