Bahrijchuk N. Euphemisms in the Ukrainian literary prose of the end of XX - beginning of the XXI century: structure, semantics, functions.

The thesis concerns the study of euphemisms in the Ukrainian literary prose of the end of the XX - beginning of the XXI century.The paper explains the term "euphemism", observes the kinds and structure of euphemisms, discloses their semantic and functional meanings as well as their communicative and pragmatic peculiarities in the literary works of the referred period.On the basis of the practical material study the main functions of euphemisms are defined. They are the disguising function and its kinds: disguising, disguising-qualificational, political-disguising, ironic-disguising (humorous), intimate-disguising, magical-representative function, ceremonial (communicative-constructive) function, political-correctional function, image-making function, text-forming function, modal-evaluating function and intentional-perlocutive function. The analysis of the texts of the Ukrainian prose of the end of the XX - beginning of the XXI century has shown that euphemisms are the functionally loaded linguistic units. They have the powerful communicative-pragmatic potential in the literary text and they play the role of the important means of the perlocutive effect achievement by communicants in the personal interaction.
