This paper highlights the formation of hermeneutics as branch of psychology. Psychological hermeneutics is considered as a component of postmodern psychology and a humanitarian science. The theoretical meaning of hermeneutics and psychological approaches to its definition; also meaning and the range of issues of hermeneutics in psychology are defined. Background of the formation of hermeneutic knowledge and the development of hermeneutics in foreign science of XIX-XX centuries, in particular hermeneutic theories of F. Shleiermacher and W. Dilthey are analyzed. Current status of hermeneutic ideas is studied. Narrative psychology is considered as a component of psychological hermeneutics. The role of psychological hermeneutics in psychotherapy practice is elucidated.
