The dissertation is devoted to the complex investigation of settlement and development of hygienic science in the Universities of Ukraine in the second half of the ХІXth – beginning of the ХХth сentury). The appearance of a new branch in medicine such as hygiene is regarded as natural phenomenon influenced by social and economic development, challenges of epoch and formation of scientific and theoretical bases of definition of preventive medicine as an independent direction of medical science. The particular attention is given to institutional and professional approach to hygienic science by using the European experience, formation of scientific laboratory basis of investigation. The personal contribution in the development of hygienic science of Ukraine made by the scientists such as V.A. Subbotin, O.V. Korchak-Chepurkivskyi, G.V. Khlopin. A.I. Yakobii and others as well as their social and cultural mission, moral and esthetic values, professional qualities are revealed.
