Essay

This thesis is the first comprehensive study of fishing gear and methods of capture used in Ukraine in the second half of the 19th - the beginning of the 21st centuries. The author has carried out a literature review identifying the degree of studying the problem in native and foreign historiography. New field notes kept during different types of fieldwork activity have been introduced. The term 'online fieldwork activity' meaning collecting data in shared interest groups of Internet social networks has been coined by us. It has been defined that fishing gear has a simple or a complex design, and tackles types depend on natural conditions of their usage. The author has found that manufacturing technology of the above-mentioned period has undergone remarkable transformations: they are made of more durable materials, with wood being changed into metal. Netting made of organic and artificial polyamides is now used as fishing tackle material.
