Essay

The dissertation analyzes activity of Chernihiv eparchy clergy in the middle of XIX - beginning of XX century on the basis of integrated analysis of literary and archival sources. The research is directed at search, study and systematization of ethnographic information about region population. The dissertation shows active participation of clergy in work of Chernihiv Provincial Statistical Committee (1835-1919), Eparchial Brotherhood of Saint Michael, Chernihiv Prince (1888-1917), Chernihiv Prince of Chernihiv Provincial Research Archival Commission (1896-1919), as well as Chernihiv Church-Archeological Commission (began its work in 1907) in both collection, systematization and popularization of ethnographical knowledge and in support of study and protection of monuments of the old day. The dissertation shows organizational and research activity of priests during preparation and conduction of All-Russian Archeological Meetings. Special attention is devoted to participation of priests in the work of XIV Archeological Meeting in Chernihiv (1908), it's meaning for further development of ethnographical studies, aimed at cognition of own people. The author revealed articles of church activists on ethnographical problems, published on the pages of regional periodical editions, including eparchial ones.
