Ph.D. thesis is devoted to the analysis of scientific, engineering, organizational and public work of the famous national engineer, scientist in the field of structural mechanics and bridge construction L. F. Nicolai, his historical significance and merits in the development of structural mechanics and bridge construction in the second half of the XIX c. - the beginning of the XX centuries. Having systematized diverse source material, the author depicts the picture of structural mechanics and bridge construction development in the Russian Empire and Ukraine. It has been proved that scientific and pedagogical achievements of the scientist became the basis for the development of new ideas and plans for further technical researches.
