Essay

The dissertation deals with the problem of developing students’ generalization skills at the beginning of their study at the university. The paper systematizes psychological and pedagogical standpoints upon thinking mechanisms of generalization and their specificity in adolescent age period. There suggested a structural and functional model of concepts formation within generalization processes when a foreign language is learned. The subject-matter of generalization is defined as a process of forming judgments, which results in distinguishing and denotation of relatively stable features of objects, events, phenomena and situations that relate to a whole category of given objects. The paper presents a factor structure of generalization skills that includes the following components: analytical and synthetical thinking, abstract thinking and ability to categorize. There was designed an authorial integrated psychological program for developing students’ generalization skills when teaching foreign language. The efficiency of the program was proven in practice.
