Essay

Main theoretical and methodological peculiarities of GIS mapping of Chernivtsi region land resources have been considered in the thesis. As a result of the course of work, the importance of remote sensing data and interactive maps technology for mapping of land resources has been proved. Moreover, the methods of land resources GIS mapping have been improved within the research. Testing of this methodology resulted in a series of static and interactive maps of Chernivtsi region land resources. The main approaches to the definition of land resources and its relation to land cover and land use have been analyzed in the first part of the study. The systems of the classification of land resources that are used in Ukraine and other countries have been reviewed. As a result of this review the prospects of using land resources classification system that was developed for the "Coordination of Information on the Environment" program for mapping of Chernivtsi region land resources have been defined. The methodological basis of GIS mapping of land resources was formulated by defining main principles, techniques and methods that are used for land resources map creation in GIS environment. Furthermore, the role of remote sensing data in mapping of land resources has been analyzed while the ways of its processing with GIS technologies have been defined. Availability of cartographic, statistical and remote sensing data, required for GIS mapping of land resources has been analyzed for Chernivtsi region area. The necessity of forming these data according to European spatial data infrastructure (Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community, INSPIRE) has been elicited. The process of forming spatial database for Chernivtsi region has been held with GIS ArcGIS 10.2 in the ArcGIS File Geodatabase format. On the basis of the established spatial database a series of static maps of Chernivtsi region land resources in compliance with the classification system by purpose and by land users, economic activities and lands has been created.
