Essay

Dissertation represents the multi-aspect study of new Gravettian sites in the Velyka Vys' basin, Kirovograd region (Troianove 4A, Troianove 4B, Ozerove). The obtained assemblages exhibit expressive local specificity. Gravettian sites of the Bug area were emerged during the Middle phase of the Upper Paleolithic (27-19 ky BP) as a result of movement of carriers of Gravettian tradition ("Molodova culture") from the Dniester basin eastward. In its turn, this population was genetically related to the Central European carriers of Gravettian tradition of "Pavlovian type". The subsequent, i.e. Epigravettian, development stage of the Gravettian tradition in the Central Ukraine is dated to the Late phase of the Upper Paleolithic (ca. 19-12 ky BP). It is represented in the region by the materials of the upper layers 1-5 of Volodymyrivka site in Syniukha basin. Studying of flint assemblages of Volodymyrivka upper layers allows to recognize their prevailing similarity with the Epigravettian sites of the forest-steppe zone of Dnipro area. Keywords: Gravettian, Gravettian tradition, Epigravettian, Upper Paleolithic, "Molodova culture", "Pavlovian type", sites, flint assemblages, material culture.
