Folk icon functional, art and aesthetic meaning transformations in spatiotemporal dynamics of Kyiv and Chernihiv-Siverschyna Polissya culture at the end of the XVII-XIX century as well as the folk icon painting and the other cultural components in interconnection are investigated in the dissertation. The problematic points of 'folk icon' definition's interpretation have been defined. Folk icon cultural identification qualities as the frontier non-official culture phenomenon have been revealed. Ukrainian folk icon painting typology has been introduced grounding on such criteria as: stylistic peculiarities, specificities of production, narrative repertoire. The basic folk icon functions in Polissya cultural environment have been described in the research. The historical and socio-cultural factors of massive inquiry about the folk have been clarified. Using the XVIII-XIX centuries archival statistic data, the location of Kyiv and Chernihiv-Sivershchyna Polissya icon painting centres dating by the XIX century as well as the reasons of their emergence and functioning mechanisms have been identified. It has been proved in the research that the ornamental elements and motives as well as the unique chromatic scale appear to be specific art features of Polissya folk icons.
