Essay

Dissertation is devoted to historical and codycological research on the Ukrainian cyrillic handwritten books of the XVII century, that helps to establish the role and meaningfulness of a handwritten book in a cultural, religious, and educational process, as an artifact of the Ukrainian written book tradition and national heritage. Nearly 179 cyrillic handwritten books оf Ukrainian origin were identified and analyzed, the attribution and description of the undated books of various collections was performed, and thematic groups and individual manuscript first involved in the scientific revolution were determined. The dissertation outlines the main сodycologiсal features of the Ukrainian Cyrillic books of the XVII century, determines the specific characteristics of the subject matter of texts, types, language, ornaments, types of script, frame, shape and structure of the book, writing material, size, watermarks, records, and so on. The influence of early printed books on manuscripts was highlighted. The principles of сodycologiсal describing manuscripts of the XVII century taking into account the characteristics of this period, and its adaptation to the formalized description and metadata database "Codex", that exists in the Institute of Manuscripts of the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine are suggested. The inclusion of information in the database was performed.
