Essay

On the basis of a comprehensive analysis of ethnographic and folkloric sources and resting upon the achievements of domestic and foreign ethnology (cultural anthropology), the authoress makes a first attempt of a systematic investigation of wedding ceremonies as an important constituent part of the traditional socialization mechanism of the young Transcarpathian Boykos in the mid-XXth to early XXIst centuries. The paper introduces new field materials into scientific circulation as well. There is also full-scale disclosure of the outline and the principal structural elements of Transcarpathian Boykos' wedding, as well as their inherent symbolism, in inextricable link with the population's outlook. The author ascertains common and different features of Transcarpathian Boykos' traditional wedding compared to wedding ritual of the Ciscarpathian Boykos and other ethnographic groups of the Ukrainian nation, as well as beside the nuptial rites of neighbouring peoples of the Carpathian-Balkan region; the authoress reveals the peculiarities which are unique to the Transcarpathian Boykos. She also carries out detailed description of the bridal costumes of newly married couples and wedding dishes.
